(On a technical note, Lamont's math is a bit off.  If a child is born with 32 bones in its spine and 5 fuse in adulthood, then the adult should have 28 vertebra-- not 27!  I guess in this case The Shadow didn't know.  It really doesn't matter since a quick Google search tells me that the average person is born with 33 individual bones (the vertebrae) that interact and connect with each other through flexible joints called facets. By the time a person becomes an adult most have only 24 vertebrae because some vertebrae at the bottom end of the spine fuse together during normal growth and development.)
