The Golden Grotto

Love this cover.  Won't bore you with the reasons but they should be obvious.  Rozen utilized the concentric circles very well in this one and the omnipotent feeling that one gets about The Shadow is great.  I look forward to reading this one but in the meantime I have to rely on this review.

Alex Ross Annual #1

Not sure why but this cover doesn't really do it for me.  Maybe it's because The Shadow seems dwarfed by the rest of the composition.

Another new clew

I was on assignment last week.  Back to the usual business of trying to stump Agent T.

Alex Ross #25

I like the homage but would rather have had an effort at an iconic image for the final issue.

The Curse of Thoth

I believe the curse struck this very ugly cover!!!  I won't even go into any discussion re: this wretched illustration and complete affront to the proud history of The Shadow.  Check out this review to see if the tale redeems this horrible cover.

Alex Ross #24

Cool concept but I really didn't like the story.

The Killer

I really like this cover.  Simple and vibrant with the classic silhouette cast onto the cover.  Only the 41st published tale of The Shadow so this is one of those early cases that will probably be on your must read list. If you haven't read this story, submitted by Gibson as "Appointment With Death", then maybe this review will help make up your mind.

A complicated composition that just doesn't work for me.  Too much going on in this one.

Clew

Here we go again.

Alex Ross #20

With the strong light behind The Shadow one would expect a strong cast shadow to lead our eye off of the page rather than lie beneath our hero.

The Golden Pagoda

Come on!!!  What's not to love?!  The gat.  The ring.  A possible clew in the chinese characters pinned by the oriental dagger.  The Chinatown motif of the pagoda.  The rendering is top notch and the composition is solid.  Yeah, I'd love to have seen this on the newsstands in '38.  I haven't read this one but I do own it as it was reproduced by Anthony Tolling in Volume #17 of his double novel reprints.  If you haven't read it either you can check out this review.

This cover intrigued me very much.  For some reason it felt like a Doc Savage cover by James Bama.  Probably the blue winter aspect of the illustration.

New clew

Give it a go.  By the by, I love this cover.

Alex Ross #18

Nothing about this cover would make me interested in what awaits inside.  Well done but dull.

The Dead Who Lived

Just a so so cover.  Was never a fan of the green hued garb or seeing The Shadow at the mercy of a villain (obviously).  I'm sure he got out of this one okay but maybe you should check out this review to make sure.

Alex Ross #17

Would've been fun to have seen a hint of a cobra tattoo exposed on his chest.  Granted, Walter never used that bit of info but still...

The Old-School by Coran Stone

Found this online early today.  Always fun to see The Shadow pop up in unexpected places.  Who knew?  Well, we know who knew.

Alex Ross #16

Better.  However, the tangent of the guards hat and tommy gun with the edge of the spotlight is bothersome. Still, this image makes one wonder how will our hero escape this predicament.

A bit more of a clew

Give this a try, Agent T.

Alex Ross #15

Again, nicely rendered but I don't like seeing The Shadow apparently crawling away, beaten.

Shadow Over Alcatraz

Well done cover but... no thank you.  This almost seems like a Good Housekeeping cover with The Shadow pasted into it.  I've never been a fan of our hero in broad daylight.  I haven't read the story so I can only refer any agents to the review found here.  Apparently this is one of the all time classics.

Alex Ross #12

Now this is The Shadow I know and love!  The man in black with just a touch of red towering over the city he protects.  Iconic.

More clew for Tuesday

A little bird suggested I post a bit more...

Alex Ross #11

Very cool rendition of the Dark Eagle.  I really appreciate the overall red tone of the image.  Could have done without the fringe on the end of the scarf.  Of course, I'm not a fan of the scarf at all any way...

First clew of June

Another clew... this is not a favorite of mine.

Alex Ross #10

This, to me, has more of a paperback cover look.  That's not a bad thing.  Love the cover, just wasn't crazy about the story.
