Serpents of Siva

Ah, the mysterious East.  Mysticism, ancient culture, death lurking around every corner (or in every coffin).  This cover must have appealed greatly to the late 1930's reader.  This cover promised adventure and, according to this review, the reader got just that.  What more could a young (or middle aged) man want?  I've said it before and I will certainly say it again, what a time to live.

I thought it might be interesting to see the comparison of the comic version with the Edd Cartier version from the original pulp illustration.  Make your own choice as to which you prefer.  I know I prefer the original.  Just so well done.  Cartier did some really great work.

Okay, not the greatest of covers but within is one great tale.  I know that the whole Ying Ko back story is the one most of those familiar with The Shadow seem to keep as gospel but I have always been much more partial to the WWl era czarist storyline.  And this is the one that reveals our hero's affiliation with the Seventh Star.  I don't want to ruin anything about this story so read this synopsis and make the judgement for yourself about whether or not you want to read this very early tale.  You can't go wrong... The Shadow Knows.

Road of Crime

A different kind of tale of The Shadow.  I have read this one and really enjoyed it.  I won't go into any details for anyone who hasn't read it but if you want an idea go here.  The cover?  Great cover.  I wish there had been some of the iconic greens and purples cast on his face to relate to the graphic elements of the background but that is quibbling.  This looks like The Shadow as puppeteer to the small figures at the bottom of the cover.  Solid stuff from early in the run.
