The Northdale Mystery

POW!  An action packed cover that, unfortunately, suffers from that hideous green costume and brown slouch hat.  Many of us may have first been introduced to this particular cover when it was used on the Pyramid paperback reprint of "Mobsmen on the Spot".  Even then I disliked the green suit and cloak.  I have yet to read "The Northdale Mystery" but this review recommends it and that's good 'nuff fer this agent.

Not for nothin' but here is a quick edit of how I would like to see this cover.

The Death Tower

The sixth story from the typewriter of Walter B. Gibson.  Still early on in the formation of the hero we will all come to know and love but these are the stories I gravitate to.  I read this years ago and look forward to the reprint to re-acquaint myself with this one.  I am currently reading the novel "Gangdom's Doom" which precedes this adventure by a month.  Enjoying that one thoroughly and expect to enjoy this one as well.  This George Rozen cover looks to be a representation of the radio narrator that this whole phenomenon was based on.  Happy they left the hood behind.

If not for the hawk nose I wouldn't be able to tell this was The Shadow.  More like a cowboy, especially with the longer hair...

Vengeance Bay

Lot's o' action in this one.  Stabbing! Shooting!  Even tackling!  How can The Shadow survive this pretty basic cover?  Guess we'll just have to read it to find out.  Well rendered, just kind of generic pulp action.

The Jade Dragon

Not a favorite of mine.  However this is another case of a duplicate title.  In 1948 the second "The Jade Dragon" tale hit the stands.  But back to the cover, I hate the green suit that The Shadow is sporting.  The other characters  aren't rendered all that well so, yeah, not my favorite cover.  Is the story good?  I couldn't say but this review can tell you.  Check it out and judge for yourself.

The Shadow Meets The Mask

I like the rendering of the victim but that's about it for this cover.  The Shadow himself really is not very well done.  Too bad, the elements are here to have a very exciting illustration.  A lost opportunity to add to the classic covers of The Shadow Magazine.  I have yet to read this 1941 tale but this review, as always, gives me an idea of what lies beneath this so-so cover.  If the title confuses you a bit it is because in 1944 Walter and Street & Smith reused this title.  Hey, this stuff happens.

The White Column

Yikes.  That looks like it would leave a mark.  I love this cover for a lot of reasons, but my politics aren't on display here.  Nicely painted and very dramatic.  I haven't read this but look forward to it.  This review makes me think I may move it up the reading list.

Teeth of the Dragon

Great, classic cover despite the tiny gun.  Great title.  It's the first appearance of Myra Reldon and it takes place in Chinatown.  This is a really solid entry and, if you haven't read it, this review solidifies that opinion.
