The Masked Lady

I always liked this cover.  I think it's the wonderful technique used that appeals to me as well as her cast shadow over the logo.  The composition is balanced nicely as well.  I haven't read this yet but will read the review just to whet my appetite.

"Jekyll-Hyde" Murders in all of its four color glory!

Would love to take a crack at this cover with a more contemporary approach, keeping the vintage feel.  Still, this is a wonderful example of the era of thriller comic books.  Fun.

This should be pretty easy

I think I may have left far too much info in this clew.  Guess I'm feeling a bit generous.

Castle of Crime answers

Agent J reports: The differences: the year on the cover, The Shadow's eye, the year on the piece of paper, smoking gun barrel, No. 2711, defective."

You are right... and wrong.  The error is mine as I said there were only six changes.  There is a seventh change, the name on the card is now MRS rather than MISS.  My fault so I have to give it to you agent J.  Well done.

Back from the Grave?

Did The Shadow die in this?  Now I want to read this and see how he defied death to rise from the grave!

This is just an adjustment to make The Shadow more of a shadow...

I've lost a friend

I know this has nothing to do with The Shadow or any of the other things I've covered here.  But I just want to share my sadness at the passing of Concepcion "Cep" Garcia.  She was a friend of my wife and mine as well as a model for some of my art.  I had known her since 2000 when I joined Sutton's Sportswear as one of their artists.  After we all left at various stages we kept in touch but I have to say I hadn't seen her in about a year when I also got to meet her second son, Matteo.  She left behind two boys and many friends and family who will miss her.  Rest in Peace, Cep.

Some equipment concept art

I love the crossbow but always thought the motorcycle and sidecar were obvious attempts to create a toy line.  It takes me out of the moment.  Still, nice work.

Crime's Stronghold

is the answer to Wednesday's clews.

Nice little pulp cover with some great light and dark play at work here. Reminds me of this cover.  Could almost be two views of the same scene.

More concept art

The sketches for the beryllium sphere and Dr. Lane's atomic bomb.

The ultimate weapon as it appears in the film.

Let's look at some concept art from the '94 film

Today I'm just going to post the beautiful art that ended up being the sarcophagus that Shiwan traveled to the shores of the U S of A.  A lot of work went into this.  Just gorgeous.

Needs a background

Gorilla Grod meets The Shadow!  Not my favorite comic cover from the classic run.  Never been a fan of The Shadow losing his hat or the dress shoes.  Although it's pretty well drawn this cover could use a background for context.  Are we at the circus?  Is the beast running amok through the streets of Manhattan?  Is our hero visiting The Phantom and prowling the jungle?  Guess ya gotta buy it to find out.  One last thing... what's up with the white "S" in the masthead?

The Shadow / Batman #5

I'm just posting this cover and withholding my judgment of this series (dreadful, so far btw) until the final issue comes out next month.  Not a fan, so far.  The finale had better take a better turn than the first five issues, that's for sure.

And now, a reminder of the basics of being a hero

This may seem a bit cheesy or boyscout-ish, but maybe that's just what we need these days.

Magic Button

Kinda obvious if this is for a secret society...

I'm guessing this is how the agent received his "secret" membership creds.  Ah, what a time to be a kid...

Oh, yeah

Just finished this on the airplane yesterday and immediately started ...

this one.  These are so much fun and I can't thank Anthony and Will enough for running these concurrently, just like the original run.  This is the first time I've read these in about 40 years and I can't tell you how enjoyable it is experiencing these again.  I can't recommend these two early tales enough.  A lot of the formative stuff going on here.  Stop reading this stupid blog and pick up The Death Tower NOW!  And follow that with The Silent Seven (and not that insipid comic that is being published right now).  You won't regret it.
