The Crimson Death

I've always been a fan of Gladney's painting skills.  However, I don't usually like his take on The Shadow himself.  As Agent T points out Graves uses himself as the model for our hero.  Wish he had gone out of his comfort zone and kept the stylized version Rozen created.  I like this cover well enough but there just doesn't  seem to be the familiar aspects that we have come to expect.  Too real, no sense of the fantastic or mystery. No, I haven't read this one so I'll let everyone who hasn't read it check out this review.  It's a Tinsley novel so if that is your cup of tea then you should be very happy.

The Shadow Year One #2

This mirrored one of my favorite scenes from the '94 film.  I loved the movable wall with the hidden latch and thought the "sanctum" looked fantastic (even if it couldn't have been farther from the space Gibson described).  This cover seems to be a nice compromise between the pulp version and the beautiful film version.  Nice cover.

Or so the caption says.  I don't know the artist on this but I like it.  I'm taking a stab at it and guessing it's Chaykin.  The shading of the scarf and the background graphics seem to lead me in that direction.

The Silent Death

Love the cover.  Loved the story.  I read this in the 70's when it was reprinted.  What a great age to be reading The Shadow.  Junior High and still not too jaded by everyday life.  But I digress.  This cover is awesome with a touch of sci fi to add to the mystery of the midnight avenger.  Yeah, this one captures our hero really well.  If by some chance you haven't read this one, then check out the review found here.

The Romanoff Jewels

One of my favorites.  I recently re-read this one for the umpteenth time.  There's not much I can add to this review but to reiterate the need for all fans to read this tale.  Early stuff with a lot of insight into the past of The Dark Eagle.

Looks like Shrevvy wasn't available to get The Dark Eagle home.  J P Leon is the artist for this one.

The Shadow by Frank Robbins

When these came out I was so disappointed in the artwork.  I just didn't like this style.  Fast forward 10 - 15 years and I started to come around.  Still later I actually became quite a fan of Mr. Robbins' take on my favorite character.  Lots of energy in his work and a real sense of atmosphere.  Yeah, it took awhile but I really think Frank gave us a wonderful look at The Shadow.

The Sledge-Hammer Crimes

What a fun cover!  The Shadow smashes crime for all to see.  He even takes out a dame!  Justice truly turns a blind eye.  I haven't read this one but here is the link to a review for anyone curious about this tale.

The Man Who Died Twice

A pedestrian cover illustration from Gladney.  It is, however, the artwork gracing the third of The Prince of Evil tales by Theodore Tinsley.  I'm not a big fan of the cover but it serves the purpose, I suppose.  Apparently this is the weakest of the four adventures that comprise the Benedict Stark arc, according to this review.  I think I like the title this story was submitted under, "Dead Man's Joke".

The Shadow!!!!  Nice representation , especially the imposing .45.  Would love to see a whole story by Mr. Bernet featuring our hero.

Really, really love this piece.  Wish I had envisioned this one.  This was done 7 years before the 94 film so he certainly wasn't influenced.  Would love to own this.

The Key

Reminds me of a t-shirt design.  Too bad the star doesn't have seven points like the secret symbol beneath the girasol stone in The Shadow's ring.  Otherwise, a so-so cover (so much yellow) that probably did its job and helped to sell gobs of issues.  Check out this review in case you haven't read the tale.  It has been reprinted by Anthony Tollin so it is readily accessible.

Wow, love this image.  Tim did some of my favorite Batman tales in recent years.  Would love to see him tackle a story arc at Dynamite.

The Green Box

One of my all time favorite covers.  I love the blue palette Rozen used and the wonderful effect of the shadows crossing The Dark Eagle's visage.  Let's not forget the fabulous ring, prominent yet understated.  And the literal use of a green box as the graphic element behind The Shadow.  Just a solid, classic image and very well rendered.  I would love to own this issue... someday.  Oh, yeah, it's a great story as well.  Very fitting for the 50th published tale of The Shadow.
