The Shadow: Year One #5 page 1

"Excellent, Miss Lane."

I'll say it again, this is an excellent series with very clean art.  Well written with the inclusion of characters usually ignored make this a must read.  However, the inclusion of Margo Lane in the origin story is a huge mistake.  I understand that this tale is basically told from her point of view but it could just as easily have been Harry Vincent thus keeping Margo in the proper timeline. And that damned scarf...

Saturday's random pulp cover: Doc Savage "The King Maker"

A very heroic, almost recruitment poster, cover painting.  I can't vouch for the story but this cover would have been one that I would have snatched off of the stands in a New York minute!  Walter Baumhofer really created some stunning work for Doc Savage Magazine.

ON THE AIR: November 2, 1947

Murder, mayhem and mystery.  A curse from Burma becomes more a tool to regain a... well, just take a moment and listen to the late 1947 adventure titled "Death Has Eight Arms".

Saturday's random pulp cover: The Spider "Serpent of Destruction"

I wonder how many casual pulp readers were confused as to whether this is The Shadow or The Spider.   A bit more suggestive than a cover for The Shadow but still, the pale hand with a red ring and a black cloak?

ON THE AIR: October 26, 1947

"Death Hunt" is The Shadow's take on that most overused tale "The Most Dangerous Game" by Richard Connell in 1924.  In 1932 it was made into a film starring Joel McCrea, Fay Wray and Leslie Banks.  Man hunting man.

Saturday's random pulp cover: G-8 and His Battle Aces "Vengeance of the Vikings"

Some of these covers really make me want to read a few G-8 pulps to see what kind of crazy adventures the Battle Aces get pulled into.  A giant Viking cutting the squadron to shreds?  This is the kind of cover that would bring in fans and the curious alike.

ON THE AIR: October 19, 1947

Murder and make up.  Curses and jewels.  This classic from 1947 begs the question... Are curses real?  Take a listen to "The Ruby of Karvahl" and decide for yourself.

Saturday's random pulp cover: Adventure "A Foreign Legion Story"

Ah, The Foreign Legion.  Even Tarzan (Lord Greystoke, rather) fell in with them.  It must have been a glorious time to live when these tales could take your imagination on such a romantic journey of adventure among the dunes.  July 15, 1930.

ON THE AIR: October 5, 1947

Another foolish husband who wants his wife's inheritance for himself and thinks that he can employ Lamont and Margot as witnesses to her growing insanity.  Gadzooks, it all goes awry.  Who'd of thunk it?

A bit of trivia surrounding "The Curse of the Gypsies" was found in the marvelous "The Shadow: The History and Mystery of the Radio Program, 1930-1954" by Martin Grams, Jr.  If you'll notice my cover has the air date as October 12, 1947 but the program you are listening to is listed as having aired October 5, 1947.  Why the discrepancy?  The World Series was airing the 5th (Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Yankees 8-6 to force Game 7 the following night.  Yankees prevail to win the Series) and bumped this episode to the following week.
