Our 25th "What's The Difference" puzzle

Have a great weekend and get started with this (fairly easy) puzzle.  Just five (5) differences in this one agents. 

And the answer is...

...Jim Steranko's "Hands in the Dark"!  A pretty pulpy homage, for sure, this just wasn't one of my favorites from the paperback re-issues.  Still, a solid piece worthy of inclusion in the pantheon of "The Shadow" covers.

A couple of projects I'd love to see

If you follow this blog you know that I really liked "Beware The Batman", the (unfortunately) short lived animated series on Cartoon Network.  I've always thought that The Shadow would really fit well into this style, especially a period accurate version.

The other project would be for Alex Ross to finish this maddening teaser page and do a story, even a short 8 pager!  I love his take on The Shadow and would pick this up in a New York minute!

The Shadow meets The Tarantula!

Love how the price is caught in the center of the web.  Solidly drawn cover although little in the way of drama.  The Tarantula's "face"reminds me of Monstrodamus in a way.  The comic covers, for the most part, are quite fun interesting, at least to me.

Would love to have gotten this in the mail

Even today this would be a thrill to arrive in the mailbox.  Found this on FB as part of Dwight Fuhro's wondrous collection of memorabilia pertaining to The Shadow.  Fantastic.

Not The Shadow but...

...still pulp.  I just received this in the mail and can't believe that I never owned this before.  Of course, I've always been a fan of The Dark Eagle and not so much The Man of Bronze.  My friend back in Butte America was a fan of Doc and I was always envious of this particular book.  Recently I've gotten more interested in Clark Savage, Jr., mostly the idea of him and how he came to be the superman we all know.  This book popped into my head and found it on Amazon and, voila!, I have something I can appreciate more than I would have as a kid.

So excited to have this as part of my collection.  Love the card back that it is attached to and I think Catt Call did a really excellent job of reproducing this.  This kind of thing just makes me happy.

Still, this is a fun cover.  The fangs and the spider on the skeletal hand.  Even the glowing eyes.  Yeah, I'd buy this just to find out what's gonna happen.  And if the adventure didn't live up to expectations there is always BEEBO, the Wonder Horse!  (Although I think, despite the way it's written on the cover, Beebo is the boy who owns or merely rides the Wonder Horse whose name is Fleet.  At least according to the cover of the preceding issue of Shadow Comics)

A comparison

I have the Bowen sculpt but believe the other is a unique one and done.  I put these up to show the differences in two very well done sculpts. 

The most obvious to me is the slouch hat.  The Bowen piece is very much the classic version of The Shadow, specifically the M W Kaluta version.  The other piece shows a stylized fedora, not what I think of when I image my hero.  Again, the scarf is something I can't emphasize enough as to being hated.  Yes, the Bowen sculpt has the scarf but it ain't in color so it plays better.  I like both of the faces but the nose has been shaved down for the one off piece and just comes off more as a regular man than the striking profile that has cast hundreds of shadows across classic covers for nearly ninety years.

This page of comic art carries on not just the great tradition that M W Kaluta started in the 70's with his classic run of The Shadow from DC, but also honors the wonderful covers of George Rozen from the 30's & 40's.  Wonderful page of artwork.

The Shadow Strikes by Eduardo Barreto

I really loved "The Shadow Strikes" series (at least the stuff Barreto did).  Some great stuff in there, to be sure.

Monstrodamus... Into the Snake Pit?

I wish the image of The Shadow was better but still, I like this cover.  I'd like to read the stories involving Montrodamus... I'm intrigued.  Another Shiwan Khan-type character, perhaps.
