Shadowed Millions

Great cover.  This is how I imagine Gibson thought of his creation.  Omnipresent and omnipotent.  Nothing escapes The Shadow!  Crime is ever under the gaze of The Master of Men!  It doesn't get much better than this.  Sure, the figures need to be rendered better but the concept is perfect.  Oh, and the story is a must read as well.

Murder Trail

Awesome cover.  Sure, there are perspective problems with the door of the safe but it gets the point across.  This is what I would have expected of The Shadow, popping out at the crook, freezing him in his tracks.  The sibilant tones of The Dark Eagle's laughter chilling all who would try and break the law.  Great early illustration for a great early novel.  I have read this one, albeit it was the paperback reprint from the 70's so I'm sure it was abridged.  Looking forward to Sanctum Press reprinting this one.

Death Ship

Originally submitted as "Ship of Doom" this story seems to get high marks from this review.  Since I haven't read it I can't comment on the tale but this cover has always been one of my favorites.  It seems like a moment right from the story and the rendering is really great.  My resident expert on the cover art, Bill Thinnes, tells me that this is Graves Gladney's first cover and it really shows why he was chosen to take over for George Rozen.  Well painted and quite an intriguing illustration that would have made the reader very excited to run home and dive into this novel.

Death's Bright Finger

Gruesome cover!  Very pulpy.  We've seen the skeleton motif before but this one has us actually watching a man disintegrate before our very eyes.  Pretty cool.  But what else to expect from a Tinsley tale.  Too bad that circle is placed right over The Shadow but what can one do, editors and A D's aren't always the brightest tools in the box.

Alibi Trail

The first cover for this particular title.  Yes, a couple of titles were reused and this is one of them.  I wish the cover art were better but it is heads and tails atop the other cover, which we'll surely get to at some point.  I haven't read this tale yet and this review doesn't make me want to rush to the bookshelves.  However, I'm sure there is something to redeem this novel, after all, it is The Shadow.

Crime Caravan

I like this cover.  Simple, graphic and well rendered.  Not a fan of the scarf, though.  Not a fan of the scarf as it became the go to item to disguise The Shadow's identity in all of the comic depictions of the last 40 or so years.  The story is one I haven't read but this review says it's worth a fan's time.

A Quarter of Eight

Hmmm, that is a horrible silhouette of our hero.  The cover is not my cup of tea, either.  I did read this one years ago as part of the Crime Club double edition which also published The Freak Show Murders.  Truthfully, I don't remember much about the tale and this cover does nothing to make me want to revisit this story until it comes up in my rotation.
