This cover has it all. The blue light! The ring! A puzzle! It just screams to the viewer "You are in the presence of The Shadow in his most secret Sanctum". If only his hands were a little paler (like the doctored cover below the published one) but that may not have been "aesthetically pleasing" to the art directors (and I think I agree.
