The Murder Master

This cover always reminded me of "Dracula", with our hero having just bitten the neck of the damsel. A very straight forward illustration that would have hooked me even if I weren't a fan of the magazine. Almost "Spicy Detective Story" in feel. If you want to go beyond the cover and read a synopsis of this story, go here.

Gypsy Vengeance

Pretty cool cover. As Agent T points out, Rozen's wife is said to have been the model for the Gypsy woman. The Shadow stares out at the reader as if to say "I know... she knows... and now, if you buy this magazine, you too will know". And if you want to know then check out this review.

The Shadow's Rival

I know that this is a manhole cover being blown off, but it really looks like The Shadow is participating in some new XGames sport, Street Boarding. Anyhow, not my favorite cover, for sure.
This tale is reviewed here for anyone wanting to know what happens before they read it. With 325 stories to read, perhaps one does need to find out which ones are the better ones to spend time on. Personally, I would love to start at the beginning and read them as they were written, not published, and bypassing the Bruce Elliott stories altogether. Someday...

Agent T...

I respectfully submit this for your clewing pleasure.

"Night of the Killers"

Kaluta cover, Cruz interiors. Too bad. Take note of the title tomorrow.

The Devil's Paymaster

In case you haven't deduced the connection of these last four covers, they are all part of Theodore Tinsley's Benedict Stark story arc. I have posted them in order so that you can review them in order. Check this story out here if you want to read a brief summary of this, the end of Benedict Stark.

The Man Who Died Twice

This tale started out as "Dead Man's Joke". I think I really like that title. I've already posted this before so I'll just let you go about your day. If you are so inclined to read up on this tale, as always click here. Enjoy!

The Murder Genius

Got a theme going here. Again, I like Gladney's technique, just not his adherence to reality as opposed to some artistic license when it comes to the costume. A tie? Really, a tie! Sigh, let's move on and read the brief synopsis of this tale from Tinsley.

The Prince of Evil

A fun cover by Graves Gladney. I really love the color palette of this illustration and the rendering of the frightened figure in the foreground. As someone who really likes the "hands" covers that were a prominent concept for The Shadow Magazine, I am unimpressed with the rendering of The Shadow's gloved (I hope) hands on this cover.
This particular novel is by Theodore Tinsley. The Prince of Evil is the first of a four issue story arc that published between April 15, 1940 and November 15 of that same year. Personally I was unaware of this particular series and look forward to reading them all. If you want to read a review, click here.

The Masked Lady

Kind of looks like she's wearing wallpaper or curtains. Must have been the fashion at the time. I guess I don't care much for this cover simply because it looks as though The Shadow is just observing the crime, not in the fray or even trying to prevent it. Reminds me too much of the radio program when The Shadow would say "Don't go near that window. Stop." Next thing you know the bad guy either falls to his death or escapes. I could never understand how an invisible guy couldn't just waltz over and keep the villain\victim from doing what he doesn't want them to do. Sigh.
Anyhow, check out this review if you want to know more about "The Masked Lady".

Crime Circus

Interesting cover. Not sure I like it though. The towel on the head and the fairly rubber-like hands just don't say "The Shadow". For those of you wanting to find out the gist of this story, click here for a brief synopsis of the tale that was almost known as "Crime Clew".

The City of Doom

I am currently reading this particular story. A great cover with a great villain who resurfaces after his first encounter with our hero. The original title to this tale was "Dr. Mocquino's Return" but that sounds a little obvious so the title change makes sense. This is the second of three stories featuring this villain, a trilogy that seems to resonate with fans of The Shadow. If you want to read a brief review of this novel, click here.
