"Who Knows What Evil...?" page 9

A nice layout to this page.  I have an affinity for comics from my youth.  They just made more sense than some of the stuff today.  Simple and easy to read.  Nice storytelling.  Irv knew how to tell a tale.  Couple that with one of the best comics writers of the era (or any other), Denny O'Neil, and comics were a joy to read.

A better cover clew

I hope this one makes Agent T a bit happier.  Been a poor run recently but that's how it goes.

"Who Knows What Evil...?" page 8

Enter... Lamont Cranston.

Young Men of Death

Bad cover.  Bad title.  What it there to say?  This era of the cover art was not a great one.  It's painful for me to even post it.  Graphically, it's okay.  As a cover for our beloved character it's a travesty.  However, apparently I can't judge a story by its cover.  This review of the tale penned by Theodore Tinsley seems to be a very good one.  John even went so far as to say it may have been the best of 1943.  That makes the cover all the more tragic.

Blue Face

Argh!  So much potential wasted on poor execution. The guns are too small.  Blue Face's right arm is all kinds of wrong and there is just something not right about his masked head.  I know agent T likes this cover but I can't go there.  This review says this is just middle of the road.  I'll take a middle of the road Shadow adventure over a lot of other stuff any day.

"Who Knows What Evil...?" page 3

What's that we hear?  A laugh that chills even the Batman!!

House of Ghosts

The only aspect of this cover that I like is the female figure.  The goofy ghost in the doorway, the cramped figures at the bottom of the illustration and the terrible version of our hero, minus the all important (to me) ring, just makes this a cover not to be remembered.  The story?  I read this years ago in the Crime Club edition also featuring Jade Dragon.
I remember Jade Dragon but not House of Ghosts although this review seems to indicate that it is a good read.  I must return to this tale one day and refresh my sadly lacking memory.

Man, I just about lost my mind...

... when I found this comic way back when.  I really hoped it would've been better but still...Batman and The Shadow! How cool is that!  Oh, sure, it's all old hat these days but when this came out it was pretty awesome.

Q

Not a "bad" cover, just nothing special.  I'm willing to bet that the original illustration is better than the printed piece and definitely better than this poor image I was able to dredge up on the internet.  According to this review the story falls into the same category... not bad but nothing special.  Just a solid pulp tale.  Hey, I'll take a solid Shadow story over most other stories any day.

Alex Ross

I loved the covers of Alex Ross for Dynamite's run of "The Shadow".  I wish I could say I loved the stories contained beneath those beautiful illustrations.  I'll probably re-read the series but nothing really stands out from this particular iteration of our hero.  Still, there were some really nice covers done, not just the ones by Ross.

A piece o' the puzzle

Happy St. Patrick's Day.  May the luck o' the Irish be with you on this clew.

The Shadow Laughs

Early issue featuring a Jerome Rozen cover that also introduces the real Lamont Cranston.  Only the third issue in the series it was still searching for its footing but still lays out a lot of what would become the bedrock of The Shadow's lore.  Definately read this one and as soon as possible so that you can understand where a lot of what we take for granted began.  Yes, I am a big fan of the early years.

Here is the cover from the 60's reprint.

What could have been

This looks to be concept art by the amazing Alex Toth for a film.  Animation would be my guess.  Wow, this would've been so very cool if it came to be.  Only wish the hat sported the wide brim.

A Friday the 13th clew

Have a lucky day, agents.  However, if misfortune finds you this day remember that The Shadow has your back.

Pondering my next comic posting

I'm wondering if anyone wants me to run the latest Chaykin series to bookend "Blood & Judgment".  Any suggestions?  In the meantime here is an image I ran across this morning.  I'll give credit to the artist when I find out who it is.

The White Skulls

An adequate cover, though not at all in the realm of The Shadow.  At least not the classic covers.  And there is no indication of our hero at all, either.  Done well enough but still...  Anyhow, I haven't read this one and probably won't for a very long time as it is a digest tale and very near the end of the run.  According to this review it seems the story is good enough but may have been much longer and had to be edited down to fit the 35,000 word count of the digest format.  A shame, indeed.

The Ghost Makers

Well, it seems that my record keeping is a bit spotty.  As this link will attest, I recently posted this same cover as part of the game.  Thanks to Agent T for pointing this out.  At least it is a better version of the cover than the one I posted.  Still not great but better contrast.  I'll try to be better going forward.

"Blood & Judgment" part 4 page 28

And so concludes a terrific addition to the history of The Shadow.  I've grown to like this story much more as time goes on.  It laid the foundation for changing he Lamont Cranston / Kent Allard / Shadow history that seems to have taken hold for following stories.

"Blood & Judgment" part 4 page 26

The Creeper

Love any cover with hands and the ring.  This has the bonus of including some clews as well.  I haven't read this one but the review seems to think it's a great read.  Whenever I see this issue I think of the two radio shows bearing the same title.  No relation between the three of them, which is a good thing.  I think this is very well rendered and well composed.  Another one I would love to have in my collection.

The Crime Master

Classic cover.  I have read this story and kept picturing this cover throughout the tale.  It's funny how this old man actually seems like he could be a match (intellectually) for The Shadow.  Different than the big gangster turned "boss" that seems to have been so prevalent.  Wonderful cover and a pretty good story.  Below could be the new Crime Master... only The Shadow knows.
