What is your opinion of Earl Mayan's version of The Shadow

I've started appreciating Mayan's work as I've aged but still find it less than Lovell's and Cartier's but above Orban.  For a long time it was only Tom Lovell that I felt was the artist who best captured The Shadow but Cartier has pretty much pulled even.  Sometimes it's a bit too comic book but his ability to create form is beautiful.  Mayan, too photo reliant for me.  He staged the art (not a bad thing) and, I believe, shot photo reference and stuck to it.  Cartier and Lovell gave their work life and movement.  Just my opinion... what say you?
