I love looking at roughs and seeing the changes the artist, in this case Howard Chaykin, made and then wondering if I would have made the same decisions. The above image looks to show that he had a pretty clear idea of what he wanted and made only minor adjustments.
Say what you will about Chaykin's take on The Shadow it was a turning point that kept the character relevant, at least in the pop culture world of comic books. This led to Bill Sienkiewicz doing his crazy and beautiful work on the continuing series which also led to The Shadow Strikes, a series set back in the pulp days. I'd say that without Chaykin we'd likely never have seen Barreto's gorgeous take on our hero.
