Saturday's random pulp cover:Detective Story Magazine: August 30, 1930

This is the magazine (not this issue) that launched The Shadow.  Stories from this publication were broadcast starting July 31, 1930 and were narrated by "The Shadow" (voiced by James La Curto).  This prompted many listeners to ask for "That Shadow magazine" without realizing that Street & Smith was promoting "Detective Story Magazine".  S & S quickly realized that they needed to protect this new property and hired Walter B. Gibson to pen 4 tales to publish and thus create copyrights.  The rest is history, as they say.
