"Castle of Doom"

 What a great cover.  What a great adventure.  This is a classic all around.  I mean how great is it to see The Shadow subduing a bad guy on the turret of a castle?!  The colors are terrific and the composition just draws you in and makes you excited to sit down and read.

"The Ghost Murders"

 False Advertising!  There are no ghosts in this one.  Gibson submitted it with the title of "The Cigarette Cipher" because, well, that's what the story was about.  Coded messages and mobsters and all the good stuff you want from The Shadow litter this tale.  The cover actually shows the code and our hero is reflected in the cigarette case that is the crux of the novel.  Just no ghosts!  It is, however, another really great early tale and is the first adventure of 1936.  Read it.

 For such a boring title this was a pretty good story.  Burbank gets to leave his hole and hit the field in this one.  The cover feels more pulp than Shadow pulp, but it's more exciting than "Mardi Gras Mystery".  The 92nd published Shadow novel from Walt.

When I was a kid (ten or eleven) I just loved this book as I was just becoming acquainted with The Shadow.  I wasn't familiar with the Wold Newton concept at the time and just thought it was great to see Tarzan, Sherlock Holmes and The Shadow all in the same tale.  I reread it recently and found that some things are best left as treasured childhood memories.  I still love the cover art, though.
