  I don't know exactly what it is but I just don't care for this cover.  The layout/design just leaves me flat.  What does that mean for the story?  Well, The Shadow Wiki describes it this way... "The weird purple death menace which The Shadow battles is but a prelude to a more amazing event - the Strange Disappearance of Joe Cardona!"

  John Olsen of The Shadow in Review gives it a thumbs up.  Who am I to say otherwise.  I look forward to reading this one.

This is the one that Detective Comics #27 ripped off to start The Bat-Man on his way to being the cultural icon we know today.  And the other notable point to this seminal adventure is that it is the first novel of 27 penned by Theodore Tinsley!  Add to this an absolutely classic cover and you've got a top tier pulp tale from the archives of The Shadow.

The most Shadow who's not The Shadow

 This is a scene from 1953s House of Wax.  I'm not sure I've seen a movie still that embodies how I think of The Shadow more than this.  Black clad gloves, slouch hat and cloak with upturned collar and face shrouded in, you got it, shadow!  Pretty cool, if you ask me.

"Death by Proxy"

 I find it interesting that The Shadow Magazine had built up the formula of the proxy hero to tell the adventure.  Harry Vincent or Cliff Marsland or another of the agents we've come to know takes the lead with our true hero hiding and manipulating events in the background.  So we finally get a tale with Proxy in the title and what happens?  The Shadow operates alone.  No agents whatsoever.  I haven't read this one but I look forward to seeing how The Master of Darkness crushes yet another criminal plot solo.
