"Well, you know... she's a hard times making everything topsy turvy... a job in no so easy to find and a man, he's gotta think of his family."
"But for a sawbuck maybe I don't think so much."

" For that much money, you could have a man killed!"

ON THE AIR Sunday, March 27, 1938

82 years ago today (or Sunday, rather) this classic Orson Welles episode, The Hypnotized Audience, thrilled millions of Americans as they huddled around their radios.  I've played this on my turntable for 40+ years thanks to the 4 album / 8 episode boxed set from Murray Hill.  You can listen to it here.  Enjoy.

99th edition of "What's the Difference?"

Five, count 'em, 5 changes to this cover that declares that the villain's name literally spells
DEATH!  Come on!  How great is that?!  Give it a go while being confined to your own secret sanctums wherever you may be.
Keep Calm and Carry On and we'll all get through this safe and healthy as long as we respect our neighbors and communities at large.  As agents of The Shadow this is our chance to make a difference.

"A sawbuck?!  You were gonna drown me for a lousy ten bucks?"
"Hey, times is tough, brother."

Shadows Will Go - Give them a Show!

Not sure what that tagline means but it's a great image and one that I'd love in my collection.  Alas, my collection is very much limited to reproductions.  Perhaps I'll just make this one to add to my facsimiles.

"The Lord of Death" page 3

"And what do you want from me?"
"Obedience. Loyalty. Complete devotion to The Shadow's work."
"What choice do I have?"
"You have the river."

What I'm reading now

This story has gotten off to a great start that I didn't see coming.  So far I can recommend this tale and if you don't believe me then trust John Olsen.  His review here looks like it won't steer you wrong.  Can't wait to see how this one plays out.

"The Lord of Death!" begins today

It appears Rasputin is threatening Margo Lane!  Will The Shadow be able to intervene before a fate worse than death befalls The Dark Eagle's erstwhile companion?  Tune in tomorrow for the continuation of The Shadow's encounter with Brother Gregor!

My apologies re: page 19 of "Death's Head"...

I always check after publishing but usually don't check back after.  Not sure what happened but it should be good now.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

What I'm reading now

The Third Skull.  Fun hidden picture cover with the oft used solid yellow background.  This probably jumped off of the newsstands in the day but to me it feels like two images slapped together.  Regardless of the less than inspiring (yet still likable) cover I'm looking forward to another early (May 15, 1935) adventure of The Master of Darkness.  If you think I'm crazy then take it up with John, he thinks this is a page turner and that's good enough for me!

"Death's Head" page 24

"Who are you?"
"I am no one...
No one."
"Yes.  Yes you are...

Anastasia."

And so ends the first issue of The Shadow Strikes!  This series had me at the word go.  Tune in tomorrow for the start of the second issue.

No guesses to the Master of Death

1: Master of Death became Master of Deaf

2: The transparent man is looking the opposite direction

3: An extra tooth appears in that Nosferatu mouth

4: The right arm sleeve has shortened

5: He has an extra rib

I'll keep amusing myself with these.  Chime in if you want to take a swing at solving one or more of these.

Finished Cussler and "The Golden Quest"

Wow, it's been a long time since I read so much in so short of time.  Journey of the Pharaohs was a fun read  and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys an adventurous yarn.  After putting that down I picked up and blew through "The Golden Quest", another very fun tale.  And so I move on...

Let's see if "Master of Death" can garner any guesses

There are just five (5) changes to this slightly spooky/goofy cover from the early years of our hero.  Can you find all of them before the Master of Death succumbs to The Master of Darkness?  Give it a go, agents.  And stay safe.

"Death's Head" page 22

"No.  She reminds me of someone... someone who died."

"Death's Head" page 20

"...a sister who sinned not with me, but against me..."
"Forgive me, brother... for I have sinned."

Next on my reading list...

Journey of the Pharaohs.  Kurt Austin and Joe Zavala take another journey into adventure as written by the master of adventure, Clive Cussler.  I'm not sure how many more novels will actually have Mr. Cussler's involvement but I eagerly look forward to them as long as they keep puttin' them out.  Clive created a wonderful universe of characters that always feels like a family reunion.  I'm gonna enjoy this and rest that Clive worked on before he passed on.

97 passes with no guesses

I saw no guesses.  I heard no guesses.  I guess I'll speak the answers...

1: Publication is now Buplication
2: 1933 became 1931
3: Joss flipped the 'ss'
4: Green monkey's mouth is flipped upside down
5: Purple monkey's nose is flipped upside down
6: White monkey has lost a finger

Maybe Friday's puzzle will entice some tries.

RIP Max Von Sydow

This man sure had a varied and long career.  His roles garnered him awards and fame but he will forever be Ming to me.  Some of the films that embedded themselves into my youth featured Mr. Von Sydow.

Flash Gordon

Conan the Barbarian

Dune

Judge Dredd

Rest in peace and may that Long Walk be kind to you.

No guesses, I guess...

Difference #1: Number is Munber

Difference #2: Magazine is Magazene

Difference #3: Month is Wonth

Difference #4: The Shadow's upturned collar is more upturned

Difference #5: The hairstyles of Evil Man 2 and 3 are swapped

Difference #6: The tie of Evil Man 1 has been reversed

There you have it... six little evil changes to this early cover by Rozen.  Check in tomorrow for a new puzzle.  Until then, stay safe out there.
