"As Margo did and found that they tallied exactly, a clang of bells and a shrill whistle seemed to say that the Priscilla, too, was witness to the fact."
The real clew is in the post's title and it's a bit of a cheat. Heh heh heh.

Ch-ch-ch-Changes
So close, Agent J. The only miss was The Death Giver's mask. Subtle, to be sure. We'll try again soon.

Change of pace
I did this little sketch yesterday and thought it might almost pass for Devil, The Phantom's faithful and fearsome companion.
We'll get back to The Shadow tomorrow.

What's The Difference #47
It's that time again, agents. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE with its 47th edition. Another Steranko cover to ponder over. Five (5) changes to this one. I apologize for the preponderance of pink but I don't think Jim even thought that HBJove would use that eye burning hue behind the proud masthead. Give this a go and have a great weekend.

Stories with a punch
Again, just love these cool old ads. I wonder what magazine this was in? I'm guessing it was in multiple S&S publications.
(edit: I should have looked at the tag. This is from a 1938 Doc Savage issue.)

Did You Know?
I love (LOVE LOVE LOVE) the advertising associated with The Shadow Magazine. These are the things that would make me go crazy waiting for the next adventure to come out in two looooooong weeks!

Burbank and the Sanctum
One of the coolest aspects of the 1994 Alec Baldwin film. As much as the sanctum didn't conform (at all) to the pulp iteration, I really liked it. The entrance to the hideout is really, to me, the best part of that room. The retro equipment really screams cutting edge 30's era technology and design.
And Burbank... such a great concept. I really hoped that a system like that really wound its way through the city of New York. Even now it would be really awesome. I wish Burbank had more of a role but I'll take what I can get.

What's the Difference #46 is revealed
"Agent J reports: Park, two vertical lines in code, gun barrel, extra drops of blood, extra spire on roof - that's all I can find!"
Nice job, Agent J. The only miss is the collar on the left side of The Shadow's face. This one was fun and I hope it was a bit of a challenge as well.

No Time for Murder
Ugh! What an ugly cover! If this review is to be trusted (and I do trust the reviewer) then the tale found beneath this tragic art has been ill served. John says this is a top notch adventure that could easily be found in the classic era of the 1930's. Goes to show, you can't judge a book (or pulp) by its cover.

Steranko comp sketch
I love seeing the initial layouts. Often I like them better than the finish. Speaking of...
I like the addition of the Phurba but wish the Bat-A-Rang was a bit more defined like in the sketch.

What's the Difference episode #46
More Steranko goodness. Love the face on this one. This is pure pulp. There are six (6) changes to this nice cover. Have fun chasing them down.

Death in the Stars
"Agent J reports: 1944, tsars (a tip of the hat to The Romanoff
Jewels?), The Shadow's eyes, cloak collar - that's all I can find!"
Pretty good, Agent J. "The" has been moved in the masthead. Also, rather than the cloak collar being different it is the nose that is longer. And yes, Tsars is a call out to "The Romanoff Jewels".

Let's check out what could have (and should have) been
Alex Toth! An animated series designed by him would have, I believe, fulfilled every Shadow fans fondest desire. This is what could have been.

What's the Difference #45
Only five (5) changes to this one. Kinda hard to change much with such a simplistic cover. Good luck.

As a mongoose whips a cobra...
Been awhile since I posted this little gem. Definitely not Gibson writing this but still, fun to have a little primer to get the readers up to date.

Brothers of Doom
"Agent J reports: Defective, Boom, extra bar to the right of The Shadow's hat (in the purple), Shadow is missing his ring, hat brim is longer on the left, missing bolt on cauldron"
Right on all counts, Agent J.

Ah... history in the making
Harry wasn't the first but he certainly became the main proxy agent of The Shadow. This is a great sequence from "The Shadow Strikes" replicating the famous opening scene of "The Living Shadow".
