Vanished Treasure

Them are some big coins, about the size of a pocketwatch.  Still, kinda cool cover with The Shadow's shadow looming over the presumed villain after receiving his just desserts.  I like the colors on this one (being a Green Bay Packers fan how could I not...) and feel that this probably really caught the attention of readers as they perused the racks of pulps in '38.  Here is a link to the review in case you, like I,  haven't read this one.

The Blur

Blah.  This cover does nothing for me.  Our hero looks so very human.  And this just reminds me of a comic book cover.  Don't get me wrong, some of my favorite art happens to be comic related but this ain't the place such treatment.  Haven't read the tale so I rely on this review to let me know if I should be excited for this one.  The cover sure doesn't help...

Partners of Peril

You are absolutely correct, Agent T.  This may be the definitive representation of our hero in action.  However, I think that "The Black Hush" may take the top prize.  As to the story, this is the one that inspired the first Batman tale, three years later.  Tinsley wrote this one as his first of 27 novels that he contributed to our favorite magazine.  If you haven't read it, here is a preview via "The Shadow in Review".
What is your favorite cover from The Shadow Magazine?

Gems of Jeopardy

Not a great "The Shadow Magazine" cover, to be sure.  Too pulpy with none of the class one has come to expect from The Shadow.  This review likes the Tinsley tale so there is that.  I have to admit that I actually have never read a TT story but I am looking forward to it.  Maybe not this one but definitely the Benedict Stark story arc.

Blood & Judgment part 1

I really liked the use of the old poster art from back in the day.  I've read this series many times and still not sure what I feel.  Well done, regardless.

and a new clew, to boot!

Clew fer yew.

Let's start a new series

I was sooooo psyched to read this back in the day.  Not sure I got what I wanted.  Sort of like the new series "Midnight in Moscow" currently being run by Dynamite.  Still, this series got The Shadow back in the public consciousness.

The Creeping Death

Awesome cover.  No two ways about it.  One of the top covers of all time.  Not just for this magazine but for pulps.  Terrific story (read the 70's paperback reprint) that is just classic pulp.  I don't know what else to say when the art speaks for itself.  Just perfect.  Here's the Steranko version.

Done.  Not a great way to end this series but I still think it was the best comic series for The Shadow.

"...and Illusion" pages 24 & 25

End of the run.  Really not happy about the modern version of our hero's origin.  I just finished Dynamite's "The Shadow Year One" by Matt Wagner.  I'm a bit disappointed in this one.  It started really well but just didn't have the punch I wanted.  Also, MARGO LANE IS NOT PART OF THE SHADOW'S ORIGIN!!!!!!!!!!

Murder Trail

Love this cover even with the blatant perspective issues on the door.  However, this is what criminals fear, The Shadow coming at them when they least expect it.  I have read this one (albeit 37 years ago) and can heartily recommend that you take the time to enjoy yourself with one of the early tales.  Check out this review if you need more prodding.  By the way, this is the cover to the copy I read all those years ago.

Happy Labor Day

Here's hoping the agents of The Shadow are taking this weekend to recharge their batteries.
