Better than the regular dreck that most recently preceded this cover. Not one that will be mentioned with the great covers of the golden era but at least one that features The Shadow doing something heroic. This would have made me feel like things were at least being turned back in the right direction. And yet... well, we all know it wasn't to be. I haven't read the story but here is a review to give you some idea of what the tale was about (which it appears is pretty good for a mid 40's entry).

Alex Ross cover #5
I love this cover. This would have been great on a pulp magazine. Of course, I'm not a fan of the scarf but as an element of design it works well.

"The Toll of Death"
I can't wait to get through these covers. There is nothing to recommend them and as Bill points out, these seem to be the Toll of Death to The Shadow Magazine. Here is the link to the review. I'm just too saddened by these covers to even express my outrage.

Long weekend
No crimefighting due to overdose of turkey (and all that other stuff). The blue light will burn brightly again on Monday.

Ten Glass Eyes
A low point, for sure. What else can one say. According to this review "Ten Glass Eyes" (formerly titled "Eyeful of Death") is the lowest point in the 325 issue run of The Shadow (here known as "Shadow Mystery"). It's by Bruce Elliott... enough said. At least one thing can be said about this cover, it sends chills up my spine.

Only clew of the week
I'm sure this cover isn't what any of us would be thankful for at this time of year (or any time of year, so far as that goes), but it has to be done. Give it a shot.

The fourth Alex Ross cover
I really like Ross' take on our hero. Of course I've never been a fan of the red scarf but since that's how most people see him so I guess I have no say in the matter.

Syndicate of Death
So depressing going through these latter covers in the series. Just no panache. The story is one I don't know so I'll direct anyone interested in this tale to this review.

Murder By Moonlight
Not even a good comic book cover! This is just a terrible cover for our favorite hero. I can't even go off on this since there is nothing to redeem this one. Agent T says that he enjoyed the story when he read it back in the 60's (as does this review) but that was before being introduced to the great stuff that came before this. I'll read it when it comes up in the timeline but this cover definitely would never have enticed me to try this magazine if I had never before read The Shadow. Such a shame.

Return of the Clews
We're getting down to the, hmmm, less than classic stuff. I may go back and rerun some of the "good" stuff again. Or, maybe something else.

Veteran's Day
A time to remember those that fought and are fighting for us and our
freedoms. Thank you to all the veterans and their families that also
sacrificed.

The Rackets King
I've always liked this cover, perhaps simply because of the ring. The .45 looks too small for the hand as does the doorknob. I can overlook those things as long as the ring is prominent. I believe I featured this cover in an early post but too bad. I will get to the story (eventually) but until then I will just have to be content with this review of the tale originally titled "Crossed Alibi".

With all of the votin' goin' on...
I'm sure that all y'all be pretty busy so I'll give another clew to you. Hope the elections went the way you wanted, but more than that I hope they helped the country as a whole rather than the special interest groups that, I believe, The Shadow would put on his radar to stamp out.

Ships of Doom
Certainly in your face drama. Just not sure it's "The Shadow" type of drama for a cover. Well rendered, which goes a long way for me but setting our hero outside of the dark and mystery just loses a lot of the appeal for me. Maybe if he were to be hanging high over the city of New York or the Brooklyn Bridge or a German U-Boat I could get on board with this. Oh, well, they can't all be classics. Check out a review of this tale here.

Alex Ross' cover art
I'm really liking the artwork that Alex Ross is producing for Dynamite Comics new series. Not really enjoying the series but I hope things get better with the new writer. However this is all about the great illustration work by Mr. Ross. Here's the first cover.
