Saturday's random pulp cover: 10 Story Mystery Magazine: "The Bride of Forbidden Valley" May 2, 1931

The second cover is from February 1942.  The first cover is from April but I don't know what year.  It is the superior cover, in my opinion.  I know nothing about this publication.  Just a great cover (the top one).  What other criteria is there?

ON THE AIR: February 20, 1949

Ham actors and prop weapons come to a head and the director of "The Trail of the Knifer" pays the price.  Who is the killer?  Why does the villain want to bring down this production.  Listen and be entertained by one of the last surviving episodes we have available for our listening pleasure.  Enjoy.

Doc Savage: RIP

It may not have been a cinematic masterpiece but Doc made it to the screen with Ron Ely, who had already played another iconic hero on the small screen, Tarzan.  Ron was a terrific choice to play The Man of Bronze and I think his portrayal could have launched a pretty good series of films if not for some poor decisions regarding the tone of the film.

I always thought highly of Ron Ely and enjoyed seeing his various roles over the course of his career.  But after not hearing of him for many years tragedy brought him back to our attention in 2019 with the death of his wife at the hands of their son.  This ended with the death of his son, as well.  The strength he must have needed to survive those events only makes him seem more like the heroes he portrayed.

It appears that Mr. Ely passed September 29th at the age of 86.

Saturday's random pulp cover: Doc Savage Magazine: "Trouble on Parade" November 1945

Apologies... sometimes I have to show the less than iconic cover art that the later years of some of our favorite pulp magazines began using.  Trying to stay on the cusp of modern sensibilities, they often didn't look forward enough to realize that the work they had used to great effect would be the path to immortality, not this stuff.  Of course, this may only be my opinion (but it is my blog).

An ancient Viking king and his crown are the focus of this tale.  Of course, petty individuals intend to get their hands on what is not theirs.  Will The Shadow be able to end the carnage?  Tune into "Death and the Crown of Odalph" to find out.

Saturday's random pulp cover: Detective Story Magazine: "The Crimson Clown's Threat" May 2, 1931

Creepy clowns have been around a long time.  Perhaps Pennywise is related to this homicidal drunk in white face.  I guess you'll just have to track an issue down and read Mr. McCulley's ha-ha-harrowing tale.
