"... a seemingly invisible force."
This tale (Trail of Vengeance) is from 1942 and had been influenced by the radio program. Why do I bring this up? The "invisible force" description married up to an image of The Shadow seemed a little odd to me. He's obviously not invisible or even very well hidden in the darkness. That's not to take away from the really fun action and rendering involved in this illustration. Wish I had a larger version of this Paul Orban drawing to share with you but we'll have to settle for this.

Remember those who gave us their all
As you enjoy your cookouts, camp outs or just a day off please take a moment to remember the reason we can do this, the men and women who gave their lives for this great country.

Zemba by Steranko
I was going to make this a "What's the Difference" puzzle but then I just got a hankerin' to mess with it (just a bit). This has always been one of my favorite covers by J. S. but as I looked at it I just couldn't help but want some separation to really emphasize the figures.
Maybe I'm misguided here and this is from a scan of a paperback cover so I really don't know how the original painting looked but I like the focus being on the figures. But for those who don't like what I've done, here's the way it looked when it hit the bookstores.
I do like the richness of this one, just with the foreground didn't merge as much with the background.

Mox is the silhouette answer
I love the mood of this cover but overall it isn't one of Steranko's best and I still prefer the fun pulp cover by Rozen.
(Hey, you can't go wrong with a great ring cover!)

This is one of my favorite things
Just having fun with my amazing sculpt of The Shadow by Bowen. A little dramatic lighting and and fun hint of a background.
Another silhouette clew
I don't think this is too tough. It's not like you have to make a run through over 300 covers, ya know.

Cards of Death... the answers
Well, Agent J, it looks like you hit it.
"Agent J reports: Dearth, WBS, Shadow's ring, card in Shadow's hand, card in bloody hand..."
I'll have to make the next one harder. Thanks for playing.

How I wish my studio/sanctum looked
I've always loved the poster shown here. I've made a couple of reproductions for myself but would love an actual one from back in the day.

Who is the Mighty Master of Nomad?
And why is The Shadow fighting an octopus out of water? And what's up with the big gem clasping his cloak? So many questions that I will never get answers to.

Waggled?
Despite the description of the waggling .45 this image is one that I always bring to mind when thinking of The Shadow confronting the villain(s)... appearing from the depths of inky darkness to bring absolute mastery over the room. The look on the bow tied crook says it all... "We're all screwed!"

The answer to #72
In case you hadn't noticed, this is a Steranko reprint cover. Hopefully this didn't cause any confusion in the clew.

Earl Mayan does The Shadow
Okay, so Mayan did a lot of illustrations of The Shadow. I like this one more than most of his work, perhaps for the design aspect of the composition. His work has always been far too static for my taste and relies heavily (slavishly) on photo reference. But that is only my opinion.

Posted before but...
...in my opinion it can't be posted enough. One of the greatest representations The Shadow that I've ever seen. The use of chiaroscuro is absolutely stunning. Just awesome!

The Silent Death cover by Steranko
Agent J reports: The colors for #22, the muzzle on The Shadow's automatic, the lady's hair color, the lights on the villain's machine, the shade color on The Shadow and villain, the switch handle.
Close, very close. I was afraid that changing the reflective light on The Shadow and the damsel would be confusing but I thought the lights being changed had to be "reflected" throughout the rest of the cover as well. So, that being said, the other change is part of the switch with the addition of a third doo-hickey. Hope you had fun with this one. Well done.

The Shadow saves The Bat-Man
Wish the collar wasn't red but I like the inclusion of the Phurba and Bat-a-rang. Steranko strikes again.

I wonder if he got a warrant?
It looks like The Shadow is the first to do the "mike drop". Again, so far ahead of the curve and influencing popular culture. Dark Eagle OUT, y'all!

What's the Difference #21
There are six (6) changes to this cover. You may be tempted to go with a glaring change but it is connected to... well, give it a go.

The Brain of Nippon
Oh, my. I'm sure this was perfectly acceptable back in the war years but it's a bit tough to look at now. I love the dramatic lighting on The Shadow but not so much the superior pose as he pulls an apparently dismembered head from a vat of blood. Yikes! Won't even go into the representation of the Japanese, just to say it was typical of the times.
