The Garaucan Swindle

A super cover accentuating the super human nature of The Shadow.  I love how the cloak is being blown by the strong currents generated by the concrete jungle.  Yeah, a really great cover.  I have read this one and can recommend this adventure (hey, it's 1934 and they were on a roll) even if it's not the strongest.  If you haven't read this one either pick up the reprint or check out this review.  By the way, if you pick up Tollin's reprint #69 the second story is "The Death Sleep" which was originally published one month later.  I read them back to back and it gave me the feeling of being a fan back in the day.  I know, kinda geeky.

Nicely done, just not a favorite of mine.  The Shadow doesn't take up enough of the image for my taste.

Latest clew

This clew should be nowhere near as difficult as trying to pronounce the title of this story.

The Green Terror

Ah, Mr. Gladney, where oh where is our hero in the cover?  The cast shadow is not that of The Shadow which drops this cover down the list.  Since I haven't read this one perhaps the man in green is, indeed, the Dark Eagle.  But if that is the case then the shadow on the wall should be that of the man in black so that the reader can understand.  Alas, it's not the worst cover, just not one that I care about.  The tale?  Well, click here if you want to read a thorough review of this Tinsley story.

Not sure how I feel about this one.  It looks as if The Shadow is shooting up the American flag!  I tell myself he is shooting through the already tattered symbol of the United States.

Post Memorial Day clew

Hope the long weekend was enjoyable and that all of the agents took some time to remember those who gave their all for this country.

Ah, the often ignored "horror face" of our hero.  I love this image but it truly is over the top.

The Dark Death

I love this cover even though it is so very odd in its components. So eclectic and seemingly random. However, the original title was "The Black Death" and refers to a ray that kills people of dark skin. Written in 1934 and published nine months later may give us some perspective so let's not get all PC, okay. If you haven't read this then check out this review.

Really love this one.

Bang Bang.

The Fate Joss

Wonderful cover for a really fun story.  I have, indeed, read this one thanks to Anthony Tollin reprinting it (Vol 17).  The fascination with Chinatown back in the day sparked a lot of pulse pounding stories throughout all of the pulps.  The Dark Eagle gets to skulk amongst the celestial world where he is known as Ying Ko.  On this cover it appears that our hero is content to just let the many hatchet men take each other out as he unravels the mystery of the Fate Joss.

Without the masthead.  I love this interpretation of The Shadow.

Monday morning clew

A clew to help with the Monday morning blues.  At least everyone can look forward to a long weekend soon.

Guardian of Death

Nice rendering.  That's as much praise as I can give to this atrocity of a Shadow cover.  Apparently this is a good story, however.  Perhaps the best of '45.  Here's the review for those who, like me, have yet to read this one.

Still the master detective.

Murder Town

Not my favorite cover (sorry Agent T) but not a bad one.  I just don't like how bright it is and how the shadow of The Shadow doesn't lay over the town.  Still, a fun idea and according to this review it's a fun read as well.  Looking forward to it myself.

Happy 100th Birthday, Mr. Welles

Granted, I'm a day late but I don't think he'd mind.  He'll forever be the voice of The Shadow to me.

Death Diamonds

Lot's of action, for sure.  Just not one of my favorites.  Hate the tiny .45, not to mention the Night Master probably wouldn't use a nickel plated or silver plated weapon.  (One of the things I didn't like about the '94 film)  The costume is purple, fer cryin' out loud!  Nope, not a fave.  I haven't read this one but this review will fill you in.  Check out the last paragraph of the review for a reason to read this one.

Hidden Death

Peek a boo with The Shadow!  Classic early cover that was a favorite of W. B. Gibson.  That's good 'nuff fer me.  I read this one years ago when it was a Bantam reprint.  No, not when it came out but a couple years later when I found it in a used bookstore.  I look forward to reading the unabridged version when Tony reprints it.  It was a great tale, as I remember.  If you need a preview, check this review out.  And just for fun here is the reprint cover, to boot.
