Doom on the Hill

Is there nothing The Shadow cannot do?  A speeding locomotive under his control?  Wow.  I like this cover well enough even if there are no obvious "bad guys" threatening our hero.  The story sounds like a good one and I look forward to reading this one when it gets reprinted.

City of Shadows

I like this cover simply for the prominent use of the ring.  Maybe The Shadow is about to jump out and take the bad guys by surprise.  I haven't read the novel so I can't say.  Maybe this review will give you a clew.

Crime Rides the Sea

Is The Shadow rescuing the crew or being rescued?  Not a terribly interesting cover by Rozen.  I suppose it works from a compositional standpoint but it sure doesn't grab my imagination and make me want to read this story.  And how is the tale?  I don't know but this review might give you some idea if you want to move "Crime Rides the Sea" to the top of your reading list.

The Case of Congressman Coyd

If it weren't for the silhouette this wouldn't look like a typical "The Shadow Magazine" cover.  That doesn't mean I don't like it, I do.  Very well done, art wise.  For anyone interested in reading this novel, it has been reprinted by Anthony Tollin in issue #43.  And for those wanting a preview, go here.

The Salamanders

Always hated that title.  Can't really complain about the cover, though.  And I have read this one.  Great story, very pulpish and probably one that really struck a chord with the readers.  Fun read and one I really recommend.

The Ghost Makers

I like this cover.  Not sure why but it really feels "pulpy" even if the rendering isn't up to par with the great Rozen covers.  I read this story long ago and remember not much of it.  This review really makes me excited to read it again one it gets reprinted.  I would love to own an original copy of this one as it was only the 16th published adventure of The Master of Men.  I have a particular fondness for the early stories when everything feels fresh and surprising.  The anticipation of new twists seems more vivid in the early tales.

Crime Under Cover

I'm a sucker for the gimmicks like the cover folding back or the faux yellow band encircling the issue of the same name.  However, that's where I draw the line on this one.  Granted, the features are there but this cover makes The Shadow look merely like a man in a hat and cloak... and one being taken by surprise, something our hero should never allow to happen.  No ring and no mystery to this cover.  I should hope the story is better.  I haven't read the story yet but this review doesn't give me any hope for anything better under this cover.

Atoms of Death

I haven't read this tale, submitted as "The Shadow's Quest", but this review makes me want to get to it as soon as I can.  As for the cover, hmmm, great to see three great characters rendered but I agree with Agent T, The Shadow himself is rather uninspired.  Kaluta would have done a great homage to this one, fer shur!

Crooks Go Straight

I can't tell if I like this cover or not.  It has the ring prominent and it's well painted but, as Agent T points out, our hero is incapacitated.  Not what we want to see out of The Shadow.  I have read this one as it has been reprinted in the most recent run by Sanctum Press.  I enjoyed it well enough but can see why this review feels that it's just an okay tale of The Master of Men as it is rather pedestrian.  Check it out, though, as early stories are almost always worth the time.

Battle of Greed

Not my favorite cover but it does tell a bit of a story.  I would like to have seen the original painting to see the colors used.  I haven't read this one and, if it weren't recommended to me, I wouldn't look forward to it very much.  However, this review has "changed" my mind.  Give it a try agents and let me know what you think.
