The Blackmail Ring

Early but sooooo much better than the last couple I posted.  I love these "hand" covers and this is the first.  This is one of those formation novels that sets the tone for The Shadow that we come to know and admire.  I read this one as a reprint from Anothy Tollin.  It was a lot of fun to read this early adventure and I recommend it to everyone who wants to see our hero at the beginning of his long career against crime.  Here is the review to back up my recommendation.

Happy Death Day

Possibly the worst cover in the history of this great magazine.  Beyond bad.  Wretched.  I apologize for showing this.  Elliott.  So sorry....

Please don't hate me

But I'm just presenting this stuff.  Good, bad & ugly.

Jabberwocky Thrust

Truly wretched by any standard.  By "The Shadow Magazine" standards this is horribly embarrassing.  Geez, I can't even continue writing about this one.  The story can be reviewed here.  Submitted as "The Jabberwocky Kill" I think killing this one is the only merciful thing to do.

Messenger of Death

Decently rendered cover, just not a good Shadow cover.  Digest tale from 1943.  According to this review the story is a completely serviceable adventure, typical of the 40's novels.  Not great but not the worst.  Much like this cover.  There are many that are worse than this, but many more that are better.  Check it out for yourself.

Isle of Gold

Fun idea, just not crazy about the finished product.  The color, while very Miami, isn't very "Shadow".  Again, lots of empty space that makes this cover weak, in my opinion.  Plus I don't care for how short the cloak is nor the grey of his suit.  All in black, I say.  If you haven't read this story, by all means do so.  At least that is the opinion of this review.

October Clew

This clew shouldn't leave a shadow of a doubt as to what tale this is.

Teeth of the Dragon

Good editorial choice to change the title from "Chinese Strategy".  This is not my favorite cover, the proportions just seems wrong.  However, I like the composition and the elements involved so I have to say I like the cover a lot, just not in love with it.  I have read this one (long ago) and it was a great novel.  If you haven't read it, here's a review that should help make you want to find a copy and read it.

Death Rides the Skyway

What a shnoz!!!  Very action packed cover, just not that interesting.  Maybe a rearview mirror that showed our hero's eyes would have helped.  I apologize for the low resolution of this cover but it's the best I could find.  It seems that the story is a good one, though.  Perhaps I'll find the cover gets redeemed when I finally get to read this one.

Garden of Death

Seventy three years ago this issue was catching the eyes of readers all across the nation.  Too bad it's not a very good cover.  Agent T informs me that this was the return of George Rozen to the cover duties The Shadow required.  This seems to be a decent story, according to Mr. Olsen.  Read it for yourself and be your own judge.  It has to be better than the cover, doesn't it?
